Wigan Athletic 1 (Asamoah 29) 2 Wolves (Edozie 11, Mane 88)

Wolves under-21s were victorious at Wigan Athletic in the Vertu Trophy on Tuesday evening.

Tom Edozie’s early strike gave Wolves an early lead, which was later cancelled out by Maleace Asamoah’s finish.

Mateus Mane’s late penalty was the decisive moment between the two sides.

The young Wolves struck first in the opening minutes, after Mane’s pass provided space for Edozie, the attacker’s powerful finish flashed past Toby Savin.

Luke Robinson’s header five minutes later briefly had the Wolves defence holding their breath, but the effort was narrowly wide.

But after some pressure from the hosts shortly after, Asamoah slotted his effort past Josh Gracey to get Wigan level.

Gracey and Saheed Olagunju teamed up in the final moments to provide some brave defending for James Collins’ team before the first half was completed.

The Old Gold were forced to be patient from the restart as the Latics used their experience and had lengthy amounts of time in possession.

Alfie Pond’s timely block was pivotal to keeping the hosts at bay when he denied Callum McManaman’s attempt on the hour mark.

Wolves’ attacking chances were limited, but Ethan Sutherland remained a positive outlet and got into a vast number of promising positions as he looked to create space in the final third.

After his individual brilliance got him past five Wigan players, Mane was bought down inside the penalty area.

Wolves’ number 36 stepped up and calmly slotted his penalty kick into the bottom corner.
