McPike | ‘It was a dominant performance’

2 min read

Under-18s assistant coach James McPike has praised a positive display following victory over Newcastle United on Saturday.

Dani Angel’s penalty clinched it for the young Wolves, in a game where both sides played the majority of the match with 10 men, before a second red came for the Magpies as a result of the penalty given. McPike has spoken on the ability of the team to continue to create chances, sustain pressure and adapt to playing with a man light.

On a positive performance

“It was really positive and I thought it was a dominant performance. We had lots of the ball, some good combinations through the thirds and we really peppered the goal. It was a very positive performance.”

On creating chances

“All they can do is keep knocking on the door, keep trying and hope eventually they take their chances.

“If we’re being over critical, we should’ve scored a few more. But, to keep creating chances, getting in there and sustaining it when we get in there was really positive for us.”

On playing with 10 men

“It’s natural that it takes time for the boys to figure out where the spaces are and how we have to go about it with 10 men.

“It wasn’t for long as they had one sent off not long after. There was lots of change and the boys adapted really well and weathered that period really well.”

On the remainder of the season

“We want them to keep being consistent with their performances, keep being really aggressive and competitive. We want the players to show those dominant performances going into the last few games.”
