Holman | ‘It was nice to get the goal’

3 min read

Fletcher Holman was pleased to get on the scoresheet in Monday evening’s 2-1 victory at Derby County.

The striker led the line for the Old Gold and scored the opening goal in the Premier League 2 encounter, and has commended the first half performance of the team which saw them go into the break two goals to the good. And despite riding their luck in the second half, Holman believes the team defended well enough for all three points ahead of Friday’s encounter at Everton.

On the 90 minutes

“I think we worked really hard. In the second half we probably could’ve worked a bit harder, but we managed to hang on and secure the three points. It was nice to get the goal as well.

“We just needed to get into half-time with a 2-0 lead. Scoring early on gave us a bit more momentum but the way we defended in the second half, not having much possession and not really threatening them much, really showed how good we are as a team. The first half performance was unbelievable from everyone – I think it was top class.”

On his goal

“They’re the type of finishes I like, the ones where you open your body up and you can just slot it into the corner.

“You don’t have to get a lot on the ball, so you just slot it into the corner. It was nice to get a goal and I think I needed that to fully progress, settle in fully and make sure I can get onto the next one on Friday.”

On his performance

“In the second half, I probably could’ve worked a bit harder but it’s hard out there – especially when the two centre halves keep switching the play.

“You’ve got to keep running back and forth. I worked hard and got my goal, so I helped to get the three points which is what I’m in the team to do.”

On riding their luck

“It’s always nice to get a bit of luck but those two (offside) goals were scrappy and I didn’t think they broke us down in any way, shape or form.

“We did well to keep a good line and make sure that they were offside, so we’ve just got to keep going now.”

On playing Everton on Friday

“Numbers are going to be tough on Friday but we’ve just got to make sure we get a good recovery now and a good training session on Wednesday.

“We’ll get together with all of the boys and let’s see what we can do on Friday.”
