Wolves under-21s travel to Salford City to play their final Bristol Street Motors Trophy group stage fixture of 2024/25 on Tuesday evening.
With Wrexham and Port Vale having already guaranteed progression into the knockout stages, both Salford and Wolves know that they are unable to advance, however the youngsters in Old Gold are set for another valuable test against League Two opposition.
The Ammies, managed by Karl Robinson, currently sit 13th in the fourth tier of English football following a positive run of recent form.
Despite losing to Carlisle United last time out, Salford had previously won four of seven in all competitions, losing just once in that time.
In this competition, Robinson’s side have been beaten by both Port Vale and Wrexham following 2-0 and 2-1 defeats.
They come up against a Wolves side who have picked up one point from their two group stage matches so far – that coming following a 2-2 draw at Vale Park before defeat to Wrexham last month.
James Collins’ side come into Tuesday’s tie on the back of last week’s National League Cup opener at Oldham Athletic, which ended in a 2-2 draw.
Wolves twice came from behind thanks to goals from Fletcher Holman, before securing the additional point after scoring all four of their penalties in the shootout.
The two sides previously met in the round of 32 in 2019/20, with Salford running out 3-0 winners following goals from Luke Armstrong (2) and Richard Towell.
