Loan Watch | Jordao benefitting from gametime

5 min read

Midfielder Bruno Jordao is adjusting well to life in Switzerland, on loan at Grasshopper Club Zurich, and hopes to help his current side remain in the top-flight of Swiss football.

The 23-year old’s goal is to regain his full fitness and confidence throughout the remainder of his loan, with the aim of fighting for a spot in Bruno Lage’s squad next season.

Jordao is looking to put his injury hell behind him, having recently recovered from a ten-month layoff, and since joining Grasshoppers, he has made six appearances with five of those being starts.

On life in Switzerland

“Life in Switzerland is good – if you compare the cities Zurich and Wolverhampton, there is a big difference. Zurich is a large city with beautiful mountain views, the restaurants and cafes are also good. The weather though is like the English weather – it’s the same, its cold every day but I’m used to it.

“Everyone was warm and welcoming when I arrived here. It was easy to adapt to the new team in a new country because of that.”

On recovering from injury

“When I returned to Wolves in the summer, I had surgery on a hamstring injury. I was initially assessed and sent for testing, and it was determined that I needed surgery; now, in January, I’m fully healed and have gone out on loan to improve on my fitness and confidence.”

On his appearance for Wolves against Sheffield United

“It was my first game back with the first-team after surgery, and it felt amazing because I hadn’t played for the first-team since I went out on loan to Famalicao.

“At Famalicao I played almost every game until I got injured, and then it was 10 months without training with the team. So, there were some challenging times, but now that I’m in Zurich, it’s all about my fitness and confidence.

“Sometimes you feel pretty good during training, but when you play in a game, the intensity is much higher, so I think this transfer to Grasshoppers will be incredibly beneficial for me to get that much needed game time.

“But obviously, I want to play in the Premier League for Wolves, so I’m focusing on helping my current club as much as I can. I’ll re-evaluate at the end of the season and fight for my spot in the squad because that’s what I want.”

On his contact with Bruno Lage

“We agreed on the move to Grasshoppers to get me back to full fitness so that I can compete for a spot for next season. He expressed interest in me, but I need to be fit and ready for the next challenge since Wolves has a lot of big players. I need to be in top form to help the squad.”

On his aspirations for the season

“We have a great group, so I think we can achieve some really great things here. One of my personal goals is to regain my confidence, since missing a year is always difficult. I need to re-establish my rhythm so that I can help the team in battling for a better position on the table and finishing as high as we can.

“Grasshoppers are back in the first division this season for the first time in years, and the main goal is to keep the team up. We play every game with the goal of winning – we have enough quality in the team to finish the season in the top five.”

On the loan process

“Seyi Olofinjana is always asking whether everything is okay and if I need anything. Matt Jackson was in the stadium recently as well. They watched a few of games, which is great for us loan players because it shows that they are paying attention to what we are doing here – it makes us feel like we are part of Wolves and not simply players out on loan.

“They’ve taken great care of me throughout the process, especially throughout my recovery; they’ve always tried to find the best options for me, and I believe Grasshoppers is a good fit. I would love to play for Wolves, but for now, this is the best fit. Sometimes you need to take one step back to take two steps forward.”

Elsewhere on loan:

  • Connor Ronan struck a stunning goal for St Mirren to level the game in the second-half of the Scottish Cup quarter-final. In the end, his side suffered a 4-2 defeat.
  • Morgan Gibbs-White scored another goal for Sheffield United last week against Middlesbrough. This brings his tally to eight goals and seven assists for his loan club this season.
  • Joe O’Shaughnessy, Joe Young and Louie Moulden all played 90 minutes for Hednesford Town, Matlock Town and Ebbsfleet United respectively.
  • Patrick Cutrone came off as a sub for Empoli in their defeat to Milan over the weekend.
