Goncalo Guedes has returned to Benfica on loan for the full 2023/24 campaign.
The Portuguese arrived at Molineux last summer, but after just 18 appearances in Old Gold, returned to his home nation in January and played six times before requiring surgery on a knee problem in March.
The wide man was back playing for Benfica in the spring, before suffering a cartilage injury to his left knee, which once again required surgery over the summer, leading to his return to Compton Park.
Now, with the 26-year-old heading towards a return to action, he’s rejoined Benfica in a bid to gain more minutes with the club joint top of the Primeira Liga after three matches.
Sporting director Matt Hobbs said: “After the tough period Goncalo had with the injury last year, it’s important for him to go out and get as many minutes as possible, in an environment he knows well, at a club which knows him well – they’ve been a big part of his rehab, so it’s a move which makes sense.
“We had to make sure he was going to play enough, and with all the competitions Benfica are in, he’s going to play a lot of games. He’s just become a father for the first time and now has a son there, so he’ll be happy off the pitch, which will hopefully allow him to perform on it.
“Also, the fact we can use his wages to hopefully supplement other deals this last week can only be a positive for us. It frees up money to be spent elsewhere and gives him an opportunity to play games.”
