Ryan Giles will spend the 2022/23 campaign at Middlesbrough, after completing a season-long loan move to the Championship club.
The Wolves Academy product has risen through the clubs ranks to consistently impress at Championship level in recent years, and the move to the Riverside will provide an opportunity to develop further.
The Boro move will be the eighth temporary switch of Giles’ career, and fifth in the Championship, after loans at Coventry City, Rotherham United, Cardiff City and Blackburn Rovers in recent years.
By the turn of 2022, the wide man topped the division’s charts for assists in South Wales, before turning out a further 11 times with Blackburn during the second half of the campaign.
Now, the 22-year-old, who made his senior Wolves debut in January 2019, links up with Chris Wilder and Boro, as they look for a return to the Premier League, having narrowly missed out on last season’s Championship play-offs.
Strategic player marketing manager Matt Jackson said: “This is part of the football education. ‘Gilo’ has been playing at the top of the Championship and knows he fits there comfortably, so we’ve challenged him to have the impact at Middlesbrough that Morgan [Gibbs-White] had at Sheffield United last season.
“It’s a level he’s comfortable at. He’s gone to a big club, with brilliant facilities and we like the culture, with a manager who has experienced the top level of the game and knows what it takes to produce Premier League players – Middlesbrough have wanted to be there for a long time and Gilo definitely wants to be there.
“It’s going to be a compact season, slightly different for players and staff with the World Cup, so it’s great he’s up there already. I think the Blackburn experience will benefit Gilo – he’s got a point to prove with the disappointments he and the team experienced.
“He has some responsibility now because he’s got a lot of games behind him, different experiences at different clubs, and once he becomes a senior professional, he’ll find the level he can play at.
“He was excellent at the start of last year and had a real challenge at Blackburn after that, which was good for him and his football maturity. He’s a great individual and this is the perfect opportunity for him to continue to develop.”
