First-year scholar Alfie White says he is ‘enjoying the challenge’ of being in and around and playing for the under-21s.
Despite still only being 16, White started Tuesday evening’s Bristol Street Motors Trophy game at Port Vale, coming up against men’s opposition in the form of the League Two outfit. A versatile defender, who can also play in midfield, White has already featured twice in Premier League 2 for James Collins’ side this season, and the youngster is feeling comfortable in his surroundings.
Speaking after the 2-2 draw with Vale, White believes the team rose to the challenge of playing senior opposition and is hoping for more experiences with the group in the coming weeks.
On facing a league outfit
“It was a really good experience playing against League Two players. With them being older and bigger, it was a good test for the lads and I thought we played well.
“In the second half, we went through a period where we were under the cosh but I thought everyone grew into it and rose to the challenge.”
On what scoring did for the team
“It just gave everyone confidence that we could do it. Going into half-time at 1-0, morale was high in the changing room and everyone was up for it – there was more belief.”
On the differences to academy football
“The physical side of the game. They were going longer and working off second balls, landing on them and set-pieces were a big thing.”
On Fletcher Holman’s goal
“It was a great feeling. We were unlucky not to hold on, but it was a great feeling and a good strike as well.”
On playing for the under-21s as a 16-year-old
“It’s a really good challenge for me and I’m enjoying the challenge. Hopefully there are many more experiences like today.
“I find it comfortable, but also a challenge at the same time so it’s good for my development. I just want to get more starts and more experiences like tonight.”
